Structural analysis of sludge floc
نویسنده
چکیده
Free settling tests, small angle light scattering (SALS), microtome-slicing techniques, and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were performed to examine how the cationic flocculation or freezing and thawing affected the floc structure. The floc size, internal pore size, mass fractal dimensions determined from free-settling test or small angle light scattering test, aeral porosity, boundary fractal dimension and Sierpinski carpet fractal dimension of pore boundary from 2D slices, and the volume porosity, compactness, and the pores’ box-counting fractal dimension from three-dimensional reconstructed image, were estimated and compared.

Settling behaviour of polymer flocculated water-treatment sludge II: effects of floc structure and floc packing
On the basis of experiments carried out using an image analysis system and static zone settlement, the alum sludge floc structure and the floc packing status with varied polymer dosages were examined in greater detail to reveal the link with the settling behaviour manifested in the “CML30 method”. The results of image analysis lead to the findings of the floc size with a pattern in initially gr...
متن کاملComparison and Analysis of Membrane Fouling between Flocculent Sludge Membrane Bioreactor and Granular Sludge Membrane Bioreactor
The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of inoculating granules on reducing membrane fouling. In order to evaluate the differences in performance between flocculent sludge and aerobic granular sludge in membrane reactors (MBRs), two reactors were run in parallel and various parameters related to membrane fouling were measured. The results indicated that specific resistance to the fo...
متن کاملLinking floc structure and settling properties to activated sludge population dynamics in an SBR.
Over a period of 227 days properties of activated sludge grown in an sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operated under stable conditions were analyzed. Settling properties (sludge volume index (SVI)) of the activated sludge were compared with on-line measurements of floc size and size distribution obtained by using a laser light scattering technique (Malvern Mastersizer/S, Malvern, UK), and with me...
متن کاملMicromechanics of wastewater sludge floc: force-deformation relationship at cyclic freezing and thawing.
This study examined shape changes in two typical wastewater flocs subjected to cyclic freezing and thawing and the associated force exerted by the ice front. While freezing, the engulfing ice front gradually pulled the floc apart. Subsequent thawing only partially restored the floc's shape. By the Maxwell model, used to interpret gross shape deformations, both flocs were visco-elastic objects e...
متن کاملIsolation of floc-producing bacteria from activated sludge.
Although the activated sludge process for stabilizing liquid organic wastes is primarily a biological process, very little research has been conducted on the pure biological phases of this process. Until the work of Butterfield (1935), activated sludge was considered by some as a physio-chemical process and by others as a bio-chemical process. Butterfield isolated a bacterium, Zoogloea ramigera...
